No Hall of Fame for Roberto Alomar This Year

Written by: Lady Way

Roberto Alomar Hall of Fame

Late Monday night, arguably the greatest 2nd baseman to ever play the game landed in New York City with his family for the possibility that come Thursday his presence would be needed at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to receive his Hall of Fame honors.  According to friend and SSP’s own Aris Sakellaridis, to be around Roberto Alomar, a lifetime .300 hitter and 10x Gold Glove winner, almost doesn’t feel like being around greatness.  Almost.

Roberto, according to Aris who spent the 48 hours leading up to the non-announcement with the Alomar, is a man who is extremely humble and more concerned about others around him.  He always has a smile and a friendly word for everyone, be it the media or fans who recognize him on the street.

The day before the Hall of Fame announcement, Roberto took the time to head up to New York Presbyterian with pal Mariano Rivera to play a belated Santa Claus with the children.  Giving back to the community, something that was always important to Alomar during his playing days, has not ceased in the 6 years since he hung up his jersey and cleats.  Patients and employees alike stopped Roberto throughout his visit to wish him luck on what they all felt would be a well-deserved induction.  Alomar, positive as ever, had kind regards for everyone, but was more concerned with hanging out with all the kids.

Yesterday around noon, when Aris arrived at Alomar’s Whitestone home, the MLB truck was already parked outside and ready to go.  The press filled his kitchen.  What might have been a festive environment was instead more of a silent and reverent one.  Alomar was the most relaxed of anyone, remaining a “cool nervous”.  His beautiful wife, Maria Del Pilar Alomar, and son Roberto Jr. were far more visibly nervous than he was.

As 2pm approached and went without a phone call to the Alomar household, the television remained locked on mute.  At the strike of 2, as the MLB Network was airing their inductees, those around Alomar scrambled to look for the missing remote.  Before it could be located, the words across the bottom of the screen scrolled reading that Andre Dawson would be this year’s only inductee.  The first words out of Alomar’s mouth were something to the effect of, “All right, we’ll get in next year.”  His son was in tears and those around him were far more shaken than he was that this would not be Alomar’s year.  Roberto, never one to feel sorry for himself, spent the time consoling those around him.  Roberto stands firm in his knowledge that he has the stats and the talent: what happens from now on is out of his hands.

His first phone call was to umpire John Hirschbeck, to reassure him there was no hard feelings over the spitting incident and he in no way felt Hirschbeck was responsible for what did not transpire that day.  His phone began to ring off the hook and Alomar fielded most of the calls, including one from brother Sandy, Jr.  As he walked from his living room to the kitchen where the press had congregated, he held his head up like the true champion he is and was greeted with a an ovation.

Alomar spent his last night in New York, as he had spent the night prior, dining at El Nuevo Caridad Restaurant on 116th Street and 2nd Avenue, with his agents Don Boggs and Anthony Cabral.  Boggs and Cabral, who have been with Roberto since his days in San Diego, had flown in just hours after the non-announcement.  They all laughed and reminsced about his career and the many good times, over bottled water and vegetable platters.  The restaurant owner and staff, the same people who wished him well the day before, told him they felt he was robbed and he would get it next year.

Roberto just smiled at the thought and said he would again wait for the call next year.  After that, he said, they would have to track him down at the mall or somewhere and let him know that he fiinally received his well-deserved recognition.

Why would Alomar need to call Hirschbeck and reassure him of anything? Alomar was at fault, not Hirschbeck. What a douche.

This article left out the part about Alomar getting up from dinner to drop a turd in the mens room that got stuck and wouldn’t flush, causing a patron to get sick after he went in there after Alomar left.

  5. Tim says:

Thank God Hirschbeck can sleep at night knowing he’s been forgiven for being spit on. Alomar is a prick.

  6. Soul On Ice says:

I’m sure Alomar also magnanimously forgave Hirschbeck’s son for dying from ALD and turning the old man into such a crabass that Alomar had no choice but to spit in his face.

Alomar is a worthless douchebag who makes Ty Cobb look like a saint.

Wearing one of these MLB Kid jerseys would symbolize a hard core fan at one point of time. And despite the fact that loyal football fans will always be the biggest market for these and other MLB Kid sportswear items and collectibles, interest in MLB Kid jerseys has been divided over the years. In fact the authentic NCAA football jersey is an item of fashion and style to many, in particular among the youth. Casual fans are now more likely to purchase authentic jerseys. Even though the market for the authentic NCAA football jersey has increased, fans at times have to wait for orders to be filled.

Check your facts before making ignorant comments. The reason why Alomar called Hirschbeck to forgive him for the spitting incident is because Alomar spit on him only after Hirschbeck yelled a racial slur at Alomar during the argument. That’s why they have “forgiven each other” and become friends. His snub by the writers is absolutely ludicrous, to say the least, and shows that the current system of selecting HOFers caters to the whims and agenda of writers rather than on the true merits of ball players.

  10. serge says:

Affirmed — he called Hirschbeck to forgive the man he spat on? Seriously?

Are we sure the author of this post didn’t get blinded by Alomar’s saintly glow and transcribed it wrong? Maybe he had a little spit in his eye.

    http://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/24/sports/hirschbeck-is-back-in-an-unwelcome-spotlight.html

“The Alomar incident, which baseball would love to be forgotten, popped back into view because of Hirschbeck’s incident in Anaheim last Wednesday night with Hideki Irabu, the Yankees’ temperamental Japanese pitcher.

Believing that Irabu, by angrily kicking at the dirt on the mound, was showing up the umpires for calling two balks on him, Hirschbeck charged the mound and berated the pitcher. After the game, at least one member of the Yankees accused the umpire of making an ethnic slur (later, no one would acknowledge they heard it) by putting ”Japanese” in front of the obscene 12-letter name he called Irabu.

Hirschbeck denied the slur, just as he denied calling Alomar a two-word obscenity. Tellingly, though, the cuss word Hirschbeck uttered at Irabu was similar to what Alomar said provoked him. It’s also the word that brings automatic ejection for a player who uses it with an umpire. “

  19. Nes says:

Only Hirshbeck and Alomar know that Hirshbeck called Alomar a faggot and made a comment about Alomar’s mother. In our culture we fight people for saying something bad about our mothers. Hirshbeck got off easy. Hirshbeck knows what he did and so do we. This is something the American media never mentioned.
