Man of the Week – Charlie Whitehurst

Written by: Valerie Shea

You are probably wondering “Who the hell is Charlie Whitehurst??” and I can’t blame you. Even I had no idea he existed until a few days ago, but I am happy to now know that he walks the earth. For the last four NFL seasons Charlie has been the #3 quarterback for the San Diego Chargers, and he’s never thrown a pass in the regular season. Oh well, at least he has his good looks and a shiny new 2 year, $10 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks.

Just last week the Chargers traded Whitehurst to Seattle where he’ll compete with Matt Hasselbeck for the starting position. Hasselbeck hasn’t been able to avoid injuries lately, so odds are Whitehurst will see regular season action at some point this year, and I can’t wait to watch him go. Charlie played college ball for the Clemson Tigers, and he’s yet another NFL legacy player. His father David Whitehurst is best known as quarterback for the Green Bay Packers from 1977-1983.

I have three tips to help Charlie through this next NFL season.

1. Lose the hair.
2. Keep the beard.
3. SMILE!

Selanne Nets #600

Written by: David S

Teemu Selanne entered the NHL 18 years ago with a bang, scoring a whopping 72 goals in his first NHL season with the Winnipeg Jets.  Add to that his 56 assists, and you have one of the best rookie campaigns in recent memory.  Last night, Selanne solidified his spot as one of the best European-born players of all time, scoring his 600th career goal against one of his former teams, the Colorado Avalanche.

Many fans first memories of Selanne are not with the Jets, but his first run with the Anaheim Ducks.  He and Paul Kariya, who scored his 400th goal this past Thursday against the Rangers, were the two young dynamic stars that many people, even outside of Anaheim, loved to follow.  They had good reason too, as Selanne managed to average more than a point per game during those glorious years in Anaheim, including 225 goals during that span.

After a trade so San Jose, and a short lived reunion with Paul Kariya in Colorado, the best thing that could have happened to Selanne in 2004, then 34, happened.  The NHL cancelled the 2004-2005 season.  Selanne, riddled with the injuries that come with playing in the NHL, took the year off, and let himself recover.  His return to Anaheim after the lockout was one for the ages, as he came storming back with 40 goals and 50 assists in 2005-2006.  After another 90+ point year in 2006-2007, Selanne entered the playoffs with just one thing missing on his now Hall of Fame resume; a Stanley Cup.  His Ducks teammates delivered, and Selanne was finally able to hold the Lord Stanley’s Cup after a 16 year wait.

Selanne joins an exclusive club with his 600th marker, becoming just the 18th player in history to reach the mark.  He is now just one goal away from Jari Kurri, his childhood idol, from being #2 in goals scored amongst European-born players (Jaromir Jagr is #1).  Selanne has had a very long, very successful career.  Should he call it quits after this year, the Hall will open its doors for Selanne, a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Behind the Mascot: Admiral Ackbar?

Written by: The Jersey Kid

While Ole Miss missed out on the NCAA Tournament this year, there still has been plenty of excitement coming from the Oxford campus in recent months. The Rebels are looking for a new mascot to represent their sports teams, since the school gave the ax to Colonel Reb in 2003 (due to his resemblance to a plantation owner of the old Confederate South). The popular choice to take over the role of mascot is a bit surprising unless you stood in line for two days to see The Phantom Menace. Yes Star Wars fans, a movement has swept the university to make Admiral Ackbar, the Supreme Commander of the Rebel Alliance, the new Ole Miss mascot.

Like any groundswell of support that arises nowadays, the push for Admiral Ackbar has come from the Internet. There are Facebook and Twitter pages and a website —www.notatrap.org — named in honor of the brave soldier’s “It’s a trap!” warning that he gives to his troops on Endor (for all you non Star Wars geeks, that’s the planet where the cuddly Ewoks live). The site makes it’s point pretty strongly by asking “Who wants a Colonel when you can have an Admiral?”

I can’t imagine why, but not everyone is thrilled with the idea. According to the trusted TMZ, some students are threatening to transfer and parents of prospective students are saying they won’t send their children to Ole Miss if the Admiral becomes the new mascot. There is no timeline for an official decision on the issue, but it is sure to be a battle that will rival the “Clone Wars.” Until the next Behind the Mascot column, “May the force be with you.”

Ray Negron, one of the nicest guys in the Yankees organization and the author of the New York Times bestseller The Boy of Steel and The Greatest Story Never Told: The Babe and Jackie, is working on his latest story titled Henry and Me, a tribute to the great Thurman Munson.  A few current Yankees are a part of the movie and spent some down time at spring training loaning their voices to the film.

New Yankee Curtis Granderson gets ready for his acting debut!

Hip...Hip...Jorge!!

Nick Swisher hoping to bring a second consecutive world championship to New York

On second thought, maybe Swisher should stick to the outfield

Henry and Me is set to be released in theaters in Tampa next March after it is part of the Tribeca Film Festival.
