Opportunity Knocks Hard For The Rangers

Written by: David S

It looks like no one wants to be in the playoffs in the NHL’s Eastern Conference. Last night, the Islanders took care of business against the Flyers, the Panthers shut out the Bruins, and the Thrashers couldn’t get it done against the Caps. Those are three teams that are all fighting for the playoffs, and none were able to get it done. The Rangers now sit just four points back of both the Flyers and the Bruins, with a game in hand against both. They also sit just two points back of Atlanta, with two games in hand there. Although the Thrashers are still in ninth place, the Rangers need them to lose as well. (more…)

Selanne Nets #600

Written by: David S

Teemu Selanne entered the NHL 18 years ago with a bang, scoring a whopping 72 goals in his first NHL season with the Winnipeg Jets.  Add to that his 56 assists, and you have one of the best rookie campaigns in recent memory.  Last night, Selanne solidified his spot as one of the best European-born players of all time, scoring his 600th career goal against one of his former teams, the Colorado Avalanche.

Many fans first memories of Selanne are not with the Jets, but his first run with the Anaheim Ducks.  He and Paul Kariya, who scored his 400th goal this past Thursday against the Rangers, were the two young dynamic stars that many people, even outside of Anaheim, loved to follow.  They had good reason too, as Selanne managed to average more than a point per game during those glorious years in Anaheim, including 225 goals during that span.

After a trade so San Jose, and a short lived reunion with Paul Kariya in Colorado, the best thing that could have happened to Selanne in 2004, then 34, happened.  The NHL cancelled the 2004-2005 season.  Selanne, riddled with the injuries that come with playing in the NHL, took the year off, and let himself recover.  His return to Anaheim after the lockout was one for the ages, as he came storming back with 40 goals and 50 assists in 2005-2006.  After another 90+ point year in 2006-2007, Selanne entered the playoffs with just one thing missing on his now Hall of Fame resume; a Stanley Cup.  His Ducks teammates delivered, and Selanne was finally able to hold the Lord Stanley’s Cup after a 16 year wait.

Selanne joins an exclusive club with his 600th marker, becoming just the 18th player in history to reach the mark.  He is now just one goal away from Jari Kurri, his childhood idol, from being #2 in goals scored amongst European-born players (Jaromir Jagr is #1).  Selanne has had a very long, very successful career.  Should he call it quits after this year, the Hall will open its doors for Selanne, a first ballot Hall of Famer.

The Not-So Wide Open West

Written by: David S

Can the Flames sneak in to this year's playoffs?

In a continuation of my last article about the NHL’s Eastern Conference playoff race, let’s take a look at the NHL’s Western Conference.  Unlike the East, the top six teams in the West are clearly defined, though there might be some seeding struggles down the stretch.  The San Jose Sharks, currently tops in the conference with 96 points, are always atop the standings at this time of the year.  The other teams that round out those top six are the now injury-riddled Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks, the surprising Phoenix Coyotes and Colorado Avalanche, and the very young Los Angeles Kings.

The battle for those bottom two playoff spots is going to be a dogfight, one that will take us down to the very last game of the season.  There are three teams vying for those two spots, as the Nashville Predators (7th – 83 points) and Detroit Red Wings (8th – 80 points) are currently in the playoffs, with the new-look Calgary Flames (9th – 79 points) on the outside looking in.  Detroit has one game in hand on both Nashville and Calgary.

Nashville has a relatively easy schedule ahead, with just five of their remaining twelve games against teams in the playoffs.  However, two of those games are against Detroit, a division rival.  Those two games could spell the end of one teams playoff hopes.  Interestingly enough, Detroit has the same type of schedule as Nashville heading into the home stretch, with just five of their remaining thirteen games against playoff teams, including two against those Predators.

The team currently on the outside, Calgary, unfortunately has the toughest schedule heading into April.  The Flames have a whopping eight games against playoffs teams, and just four against non-playoff teams.  Of those eight games, five are against either division or conference leaders.  Calgary looks like they are going to need a miracle to make the playoffs, especially with Nashville and Detroit on three game winning streaks.

The fight for those final two spots may come down to just three teams, but that doesn’t mean there will be a lack of excitement in these final twelve games.  Chicago is now down two of their top defensemen (Brian Campbell, Brent Seabrook), and may stumble into the playoffs.  You also can’t overlook those pesky Coyotes, winners of six straight since the trade deadline, and may give the Sharks a run for their division lead.  The West may not have the plethora of teams fighting for their playoff lives, but those final two spots are going to draw some exciting games.

Playoff Race Tightening Up In The East

Written by: David S

In case you missed it, and judging by TV ratings, you are, the NHL is in the midst of one of the tightest playoff races ever. In the Eastern Conference, only four teams have secured themselves playoff spots: the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, and New Jersey Devils. Those final four spots for the playoffs are going to be a fight to the death, with eight (!!) teams in the running for those spots. The teams that seem to be the front runners for spots are the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens, both are red hot and pulling away from the pack. (more…)
