Ron Artest Unveils A New Billboard

Written by: Lady Way

From our friends at Peta:

Like Bob Barker always used to tell us, it’s important to spay or neuter your pets. I don’t know about y’all, but I take the word of any man confident enough to carry a tiny mic as gospel. Los Angeles Lakes forward Ron Artest took time out from his busy schedule kicking some hoops ass to unveil a new Billboard in LA last week, encouraging folks to take some time to take care of their pets. The first 20 attendees of the event received coupons for a free spay or neutering. Who doesn’t love free crap? (more…)

David Lee is an All-Star

Written by: Valerie Shea

I am overjoyed to report that New York Knicks forward and previous SSP Man of the Week David Lee is officially an All-Star! Allen Iverson will miss the game because of “personal reasons” and Lee has been chosen as his replacement. The Knicks haven’t had an All-Star since Latrell Sprewell made the team in 2001, so this is long overdue. Congratulations David!

I Want To Be Like Mike

Written by: Aris Sakellaridis

The 7th Annual Derek Jeter Celebrity Golf Classic in Tampa, Florida drew big names but none bigger than ex baseball player and also basketball legend Michael Jordan. “His Airness” drew the highest bid of $50,000 to partner up with a group of golfing buddies. The monies went to Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation which benefits the countries youth. Jordan’s gracefulness was felt by all who approached him. He patiently posed for photos and signed autographs. When asked about his baseball playing year, Jordan spoke of how it got so tough that he switched from a 34 inch bat to a 32 inch Louisville Slugger. Then the tsunami came, a sea of security personnel ended the conversation. In that short time, I craved a Gatorade and a Ball Park frank, making sure I didn’t get a stain on my Hanes or Nikes.

Around the Tube: Dream Team Edition

Written by: The Jersey Kid

For the last few weeks, I’ve been keeping my eye on the sports TV world, and there has been a notable trend that has come to my attention: our airwaves are being invaded by members of the Dream Team (the 1992 USA Basketball team for those who don’t remember or are just too young to know what I’m talking about). From talk shows to animated series, these former basketball greats have been all over the place. Let’s start with Charles Barkley, who has never met a spotlight he didn’t want to hog. While he’s regularly in the studio for TNT, he seems to be on the tube everywhere I look these days. He recently hosted Saturday Night Live and while the show suffers from an inability to be funny anymore, one skit did make me chuckle a little. Take a look at Barkley making fun of his infamous golf swing in the following clip.

Man of the Week – Dirk Nowitzki

Written by: Valerie Shea

Just a few days ago, future Hall of Fame power forward Dirk Nowitzki became only the 34th player in NBA history to score 20,000 points. Unlike most big men in the NBA, Dirk moves with no hint of awkwardness or imbalance. This 7 foot tall drink of water is a threat in the paint and behind the 3 point line. For his career, he shoots 87% from the free-throw line. Dirk is only 32 years old, so he’ll be gracing us with his formidable presence in the league for several years to come. (more…)
